Complete Draft Essay

The quote is a representation of what Carlos Slim and Steve Jobs are doing, they both want that their words have a meaning in the minds of the audience , they want to create a new consciousness in them, even though they are both businessmen , when it comes to inspire and motivate the others, both have a different ways to show it.Carlos Slim uses more logical appeal ( facts), and Steve Jobs uses only emotional appeal to motivate the people, those differences would be shown in this text.


Carlos Slim speech has the purpose of motivating the people in order to create a better society, he is talking to politicians and all the mexican society, in his speech he highlights three key points and he doesn't use emotional appeal. He is telling the things in the way that they need to be done if the society want to see a real change,
, Physical Society, " Si tenemos un buen capital físico, el capital humano va a ser muy importante, las escuelas hay que arreglarlas,igual hacerlo, en las oficinas de gobierno, en las zonas arqueológicas, cuidando la biodiversidad".,he says what the country is missing, what are the things that the people stopped doing, like he says, the mexican society need to improve all their places for education, health, etc., as he is expressing a situation of missing, he never shows his opinion, he wants the society to realize what they need to do, and the only way that can happen is showing them, the reality of what they are living, how wrong they are and how much they missed.
Human Capital, " Mejorar nuestra capital humana necesitamos modernizarlo, mejorar la calidad y pasar ya a la cultura digital, ya no alfabetizar,sino alfabetizar digitalmente a la población"
Domestic Economy, " Pensamos que la inversión extranjera es maravillosa, la inversión extranjera no es un donativo, hay que volcarse a la economía interna, impulsar empresas fuertes que compitan internacionalmente", Showing the society how undeveloped they are is a thing that he uses in order to create a feeling of need  for change, a change in the society with all the physical capital  and the domestic economy, a change were the people start having a vision with a  competitive sense.

Steve Jobs is using his own stories, emotional appeal, for creating an inspired speech for the graduates, he is talking to people who are recently starting their lives in the real world, so he wants to tell his experiences for them to take them as a lesson that they could use in their future laboral work ,trust that dots in life will eventually connect, " you can't connect dots looking forward, you can only connect them by looking back, so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future"
The idea of jobs by using his stories is to touch the hearts of the people, to create a feeling of excitement  in them, to motivate them to go to the world and do what they love and work in  what they love. When he shared his stories, he highlights that it was hard to reach what now he owns , but that doesn't mean that it's  impossible to reach it , that's the main thing that he evokes emotions and feelings  in the graduates, and they have a clear example, that if you really want something you can do it.
Find what you love and don't settle, " you've got to find what you love, work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what you do... Keep looking and don't settle"
The reality of life ( death) " Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked, there is no reason not to follow your heart",
Finally , quotes represent the experiences from his life, the ups and downs that he had to deal with, that would encourage the graduates to go looking for something forward, and stop being in their comfort zone. Jobs is an example to follow that the graduates would take, because of all the things that he have being through and all the hard times that he had to deal with until his  succeed.


The differences that are in the speech are about the language, because of the different kind of people that they are talking to, they are in the same way of inspiring the others, but they are in  complete different scenes, Carlos, is talking to grown up people, with problems of development and vision, he talks to a society that need to realize how stuck they are and how much they need a change , and Jobs is talking to graduates that are ready to continue growing with a society with more vision nevertheless both speeches are done to motivate the people in the manner that what they are telling would make an impact in their lives.

Like a teacher inspire their students by using his knowledge  and telling his students what they are doing wrong and what they need to do to improve, perhaps in their abilities or their lack of attention,the teacher would always show them their  mistakes, and that is the same thing that Slim is doing, you can’t achieve to improve a society  if you show yourself in a tender way as if nothing were happening, the change comes when the people realize how wrong they are and that can only be achieve with the truth “facts”, that is the clue to inspire a real change to the others.

In this text  I will highlight how Carlos Slim uses more logical appeal ( facts), and Steve Jobs uses only emotional appeal to motivate the people.
Slim and Jobs, are both successful businessmen, both have been creating their own empire (TELMEX & APPLE) , that is well known in our society, even though they have similar types of work, when it comes to inspire and motivate the others, both have a different ways to show it.

Carlos Slim Helu ; Mexico City , 1940) Mexican billionaire . Founder of Grupo Carso, was instrumental in the spectacular growth of his business empire his landing in the telecommunications market , prompted by the 1990 privatization of Telefonos de Mexico , SA (Telmex ) , which was under his control. He is nowadays in the lists of the great fortunes of Forbes magazine , the same publication exalted him as the richest man in the world in the years 2010, 2011 and 2012 .

 Dialect in Perspective


           Is dialect a help or a hindrance? 
It is a help in order to help the others to communicate  in an easily way, according to the location that they have, but it can also be an hindrance because of the different types of words, that are not used in other places or the limited knowledge of some words

What resources does it make available for scene setting and characterization?

The place where they are, the nature ( plants, animals, etc), the way they speak, the clothes they wear.


 Does it enlarge or restrict one's vocabulary?

It restrict, because usually they stop using some words or start making new contractions, for not telling the complete word.

·              How does dialect influence plot development and narration?
It influences the plot development and narration, because of the way he is writing, he is using words that are from a different dialect and also he uses words that are not longer use nowadays, nevertheless the story is not hard to understand and his writing does not confuse you.

 Does it limit one to the "and then, and then" connection of incident to incident typical of oral storytelling?

Yes, because as it is a dialect ,the language is affected, giving as a result the unknown range of the vocabulary, due to the dialect just uses some words of the variant.


Does it open opportunities for sliding easily off on a tangent?

Yes, as  the narrators are stablished they don't confuse the story, they actually make the story easier for me to read it, because they are following the line of the story, even when they are 3 narrators telling different stories, this ones have one thing in common, which is the character Jim Smiley

  Comment on Twain's use of dialect, what goes into the dialect he creates—misspellings?
 grammatical mistakes? loose sentence structure? colloquial turns of phrase? 

I think he is not misspelling, due to he is in a different location, maybe the way he writes it is the way he speaks, because thats his language

* He does not have grammatical mistakes he uses different types of dialects instead, but if we were comparing with a Standard English he would have grammatical mistakes just like, M-O-R-E, 

 The story it is not hard to understand it has a solid structure which makes easier the reading of his short story, actually he uses a lot of phrases who in those days were normal and nowadays are not so common like "THISH-YER", which is " This Year"


Have students point out examples of each of these stylistic tricks and describe the tricks they used to create a dialect effect.
